Architecturally and historically, the palace complex commands an important position in the history of Kapurthala. Its historical significance dates back to the strong associational ties it has with the most eminent personality of Kapurthala till date, H.H.Maharaja Jagajit Singh. Designed as the Maharja’s residential palace in 1902, the palace stands apart for its unique architectural character. The Maharaja of Kapurthala was completely captivated by the French art, culture and style of Louis XIV. Consequently, his palace too was modeled on the lines of the famous French Palace of Versailles and was designed by the well-known French architect. M.Marcel.
